This Privacy Policy explains how FocusRead (“we”, “our”, or “the extension”) handles information when you use our browser extension. We are committed to protecting your privacy and keeping your data on your device whenever possible.
Summary
FocusRead is a reading-assistance extension. It processes web page text locally in your browser to apply reading enhancements. We do not sell your data, and we do not run analytics or advertising trackers inside the extension.
Information we collect
FocusRead stores the following information locally on your device using your browser’s storage:
- Extension settings (e.g. enable/disable state, reading intensity, font preferences)
- Per-site preferences you choose to save
- Whitelist and blacklist entries you add
- UI preferences such as dark mode for the popup or settings page
This data stays in your browser unless you remove the extension or clear extension storage. We do not automatically upload your browsing history or page content to our servers.
How the extension works on web pages
To provide its features, FocusRead reads and modifies visible text on pages you visit while the extension is enabled. This processing happens entirely on your device. The extension does not send the content of web pages to us.
Permissions
FocusRead may request browser permissions needed to operate, such as:
- Storage — to save your settings locally
- Active tab / Tabs — to apply settings to the current page and sync state
- Host access — to enhance text on websites you choose to use the extension on
These permissions are used only to deliver extension functionality.
Contact form
If you contact us through our Contact page, the information you submit (such as your email address and message) is sent to us via Formspree so we can respond to your inquiry. Please do not include sensitive personal information in your message unless necessary.
Third-party services
When you enable a custom reading font, the extension may load font files from Google Fonts to display that font on the page. Google’s privacy policy applies to those requests. Our contact form is processed by Formspree; their privacy policy applies to messages you send through the form.
Data retention
Extension settings remain on your device until you change or delete them, or uninstall the extension. Messages sent through the contact form are retained only as long as needed to respond to your request.
Children’s privacy
FocusRead is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the extension after changes means you accept the updated policy.
